Seafarers UK Marine Technology Challenge STEM day

Year 9 take on the challenge to build the best boat on a budget

The students who have taken on the challenge of studying triple science at GCSE were given the opportunity to work with The Smallpeice Trust on a STEM day supported by Seafarers UK.

The 53 students were given an initial challenge, to gel the team, before being told about the CREST award they will be awarded for completing the challenge. As they were introduced to the challenge to build either an “air boat” or a “jet boat” the lure of prizes brightened their eyes!

The briefing on the boat build explained the difference between the power supplies for each boat, either the 9V battery or a “super capacitor”. With the teams all sculpting their models from Styrofoam, adding the motors and then testing, the scientific brain in all of them came to the forefront with ideas popping out of everyone.

After a bit more tinkering, decisions were made and then the final build started. This time, corrugated materials and thin sheets of soft wood veneer were used to create the final working boats. Testing taking place and timings made; it was all down to their presentations to determine the winners!

With all groups having to present their “Drangon’s Den” style request for investment the winners were: Anita, Jake, Lauren, Alice, Joe and Izzy, they each received a power bank as a token of their efforts!

10 of the students who were attending have successfully applied for an all-inclusive 5 day residential course at Southampton university generously paid for by Seafarers UK – they will have a full program of activities in the day and a range of fun activities with all the students from everywhere in the UK in the evenings. All of this in the Southampton University campus which will give them an insight into life as a university student.
