On 27th March our chess team left school for the second round of chess, these matches would determine if we go through to the chess finals next month, here is our match report. Highcliffe defeated Bournemouth School, Poole Grammar School and Lytchett Minster, in each game by the score of 4-2.
This puts Highcliffe in first place over the first two rounds and we now go on to play Bournemouth school in the final in April at the Bournemouth library.
On boards 1 and 2 James and Adam, two sixth formers, have won all of their games over both rounds. Particularly of note was Adam’s win against one opponent from Bournemouth School who is known to be a very strong opponent. Adam applied exceptional concentration to achieve a fine strategic win.
Annelie, Year 9, again won all her games in round 1 showing true determination when surrounded by a watching crowd. In round 2 she won her first game, recovering from being an exchange down, to finish with three queens on the board.
Micky, also a Year 9, achieved two wins in round 2 and another in round 1. His first game in round two showed a strong open attack, gaining a large space advantage from which he ensured the win.
Harvey, in Year 8, managed a heroic victory, particularly impressive since he was only asked
to play at the very last minute on match day.
Killian, Andrea and Barnaby all achieved their first wins in the competition over the two rounds. Thomas, another of our Sixth Form players will return for the final against Bournemouth School.

Well done to all our brilliant players! Wish us luck in attempting to lift the cup for the first time ever in 2018!
