Southampton City Art Trip

Art and Design, Textiles, Graphics and Photography head to Southampton Solent University

On the 28th of November, Art and Design, Textiles, Graphics and Photography students from Highcliffe Sixth Form went on a trip to visit Southampton in order to go and see its art exhibitions and Southampton Solent University, and it was amazing.

The trip was to allow students to see what the future could hold if they chose to take Art and Design related subjects past A-level. The students got an inside tour of Southampton Solent University led by the course leaders from each department and were shown the different working environments they would be in if they chose to go to University. We got in-depth looks at Fashion Photography, the dark room and even a quick look at the CGI work students had created. Students were able to ask questions and receive answers from experts within the different subject areas. We found this very useful when it came to deciding on courses and which University’s we could to go to.

The other half of the group got to go the Southampton City Art gallery and saw work from a number of local and famous artists. Gallery staff were there to help answer any questions the students may have had and this allowed, especially the Art students, to understand how art is seen when displayed in museums.

After a quick stop at the Artisan café students were guided through the Solent Showcase gallery where they were introduced to a whole new array of artists and contemporary art pieces. This was then followed by a walk down the high street to Southampton Solent University Fine Art, Graphics and Illustration departments where they were given a tour of the facilities. Again, students were allowed to ask questions in order to gain a further understanding of whether or not they would like to go to University to study Art further.

Overall the trip was a complete success and showed students the complex inside world of Art and Design. It allowed students to ask questions to experts they had not previously had the answers to. I am now considering University as a great option for me and my future education.
