Students in years 11 and 12 had the opportunity to visit Bournemouth University and sample life in Higher Education. This was a timely visit, coinciding with future choices, which our students are considering beyond Highcliffe School. We enjoyed a presentation of the department and the courses run by the Creative Technology faculty, before taking a tour of the facilities, which included the recording studios, film soundtrack editing suite and the sound design suite. The final part of the visit was a hands-on experience of sound design where we learned how to create our own sonic identity and unique timbres using granular synthesis.
We were made aware that almost everything we do in our daily lives employs creative technology in one way or another, whether this is film and music or commerce and interactive entertainment. Our increasing dependence on technology means there is a growing need for skilled and highly versatile creative technologists who are able to identify, design, produce, compose, and engineer sonic soundscapes that stretch the potential of software and programming.
We learned that the Music Technology courses on offer at the University open up opportunities to work at the cutting edge of associated industries, and where you can acquire the key analytic and creative skills needed to embrace new and, as yet, unimagined technologies and their uses. Music Technology is constantly evolving, allowing developers to create innovative audio productions. The lecturers, and those on the courses on offer, have opportunities to work closely with those in the music technology industries ensuring that the courses teach the skills needed after graduation. An example given of this was the option of a 40-week paid placement, facilitating the chance to gain valuable practical experience and make new contacts.
We also discovered that the courses on offer can lead to a diverse range of future pathways such as; studio recording engineer, technician, producer, live sound engineer, acoustic engineer, designing acoustic spaces and venues, designing/constructing sound systems for venues, computer programmer in music applications, music for gaming/ringtones, MIDI programmer, design and manufacture of electronic instruments/devices, electrical engineer developing microphones and speakers, sound engineer in media/television/radio, composer of film/media music.
