Calling Oxbridge and Medical School Applicants

Year 12 students considering UCAS applications to Oxford and Cambridge Universities, as well as those making applications to study Medicine at University gathered with other like-minded students from across the region at Bryanston School, recently.

The day was a super opportunity to meet with and hear from an admissions tutor from Oxford. During the session there was much discussion about ‘what makes a really strong application’ to study at either Oxford or Cambridge.  Academic achievements, ‘super curricular’ studies, entrance examinations and the tutorial approach to learning provided our students with a real insight into life studying at Oxbridge. It also really helped to focus on how to start work on UCAS personal statements and what to expect if invited for interview later in the year.

The day was also an excellent chance to hear from a Senior Consultant at Leeds Medical School and Teaching Hospital. Our students immersed themselves in a presentation about what it is like to be a medic at University and career opportunities within the profession. They were also able to see just how competitive it is to secure a place to study Medicine at University. Leeds require a minimum of 6 A* at GCSE plus 3 top grades at A level, whilst Birmingham want 9! Fortunately our aspiring medics are well within these selection criteria and the message to students working towards their GCSEs with medicine in mind is to really go for it!

Highcliffe staff work with students from Year 7 upwards in preparation for these University applications. Year 7 have just completed the ‘Brilliant Club’ with Oxford. Year 10 recently visited Oriel College, Oxford, to take part in a college tutorial and also a mini lecture series. Year 12 students are due to make our annual residential visit to both Oxford and Cambridge Universities later this term.  A level Biologists spent a day in the Pathology theatre and the Bio-Medical Imaging Department earlier in the year at Southampton University Hospital.

The Oxbridge and Medical School application deadline is October 15th.
