Pila Ski Trip 2017

Update from Pila

The ski trip has arrived safely in Italy and the conditions where they are staying are excellent.  The recent avalanche in Italy is not near the Highcliffe School trip at Pila.

In Pila the conditions are excellent and the risk of an avalanche in the resort is low. All students are fine and making great progress.

Arrival

After a seamless journey to Dover, the ferry crossing was calm and on  time meaning we started down through France without a glitch.

Some sleep was gained by some, lots by others but everyone will be ready for dinner and a good night's sleep tonight. The  first signs of snow were greeted with excited noises before we reached the Mont Blanc tunnel! Travelling down through the mountains, more camera clicks and appreciative gasps indicated the students thought the views were as stunning as the staff did.

Skis, boots and helmets were collected before heading to the hotel to unpack and eat.

Overall a very successful journey!

Monday in Pila

So the day started early with a 6am wake up call, the students were brilliant getting up and to the ski station in plenty of time. There were some brilliant success and some wipe-outs by the staff, one of whom decided they should crash 3 times!! All in all, a great day just dinner and bowling to come!

Tuesday

The day started at 6am, cloudy in the valley but with patches of blue emerging which produced some delightful views later on.

The students made great progress in so many ways with smiles and stories from so many of them. With pizza night and ice cream the students walked back to the hotel with a spring in their steps. All in all another great day for everyone!

Wednesday

Wednesday began much like any other but with beautifully clear skies the view across the valley to the Matterhorn was incredible. Fantastic skiing conditions with brilliant sunshine and temperatures below freezing meant the students once again were progressing really well. Some retail therapy before dinner saw happy faces everywhere!  They had the "best night ever " at the disco and are looking forward to another day in the mountains!

Thursday

Today once again began bright and early. As the sun broke over the mountains the cloudless skies indicated that the snow conditions would be glorious again!
Once up the hill we were correct, after group photos the students all headed off up the hill for a day of the usual activity!

Friday

Today was the day to impress the instructors as the awarding of certificates would occur after dinner so off they went into the ski lifts and away.
At lunch and dinner the stories of slides and "diamonds of the day" abounded as did the smiles!
Everyone down safely and looking forward to an evening presentation ceremony with a fancy dress theme thrown in for good measure.

Saturday

Friday was a shorter day, a simple 4 hours of skiing with a quick lunch break then off back to the ski hire and the hotel. Having redeployed all the bags, the students followed a carefully constructed rota to get cleaned up before more food and then the coach and ferry trip home. The choice of movies may have been slim and groans of “potter” were heard as it was suggested to watch films 2 through to 8 non-stop. However some other DVD made its way into the player and happier noises were heard amongst the bags of sweets and crisps being consumed. With a 4am passport check coming as a surprise to some, we boarded the ferry, had a wonderful breakfast and the chance to stretch our legs. Not all the seating was quite as we needed but we made do!
