Health And Social Care Experience

On the 20th January, thirteen Y12 students and four Y11 students, studying Health and Social Care, were taken to Bournemouth University to look at the different health care professions that are open to them at degree level.

Throughout the morning, the students heard from a current 3rd Year Occupational Therapy student who talked about her experiences as a student and her placements in health care. Afterwards the students partook in several activities including how to: manually take blood pressure and put on sterilised gowns before surgery.

The students were then taken on a tour of the BU facilities specifically designed for Health Care courses; the tour included a look around the learning/skills labs that are fully equipped mock surgery and hospital wards to help students with the practical side of learning.

Every student also got a chance to try out the different resources available in different health care professions; for example, they tried out a tool designed to help an individual put on their socks without having to bend down. This activity allowed students to experience how others can sometimes feel in terms of everyday actions.

After lunch the students attended a talk about studying Midwifery at BU, the talked was delivered by Dr Alison Taylor and helped inform students about personal statement writing and the qualities required to work in a health care profession. Additionally, a couple of current BU student Midwives came and talked to the students about their experiences and the nature of the course.

This was an exceptional day for the students and we would like to thank all the team at Bournemouth University for all their hard work and enthusiasm, it was greatly appreciated and an excellent learning opportunity.
