Year 8 learn skills and strategies for revision

On Friday 13th January, Year 8 students took part in a Revision and Study Skills Focus Day.

The aims of the day were to encourage students to organise and plan their revision by developing independent learning skills and strategies ready for their approaching exams.

Head of Achievement for Year 8, Heather Pearson, said “I am extremely pleased with our Year 8 students; their response to the revision and study skills day was positive and purposeful. With examinations fast approaching, the students will benefit hugely from the range of strategies and skills covered throughout the day”.

These were:

  • Organisation of time/time budget – creating a revision timetable. All students now have a template they can use to plan the next 3 weeks of their revision.
  • Memory games – the students were shown a number of strategies to help the recall of key words
  • Post-it notes/Labels – the students experienced a social, fun and kinaesthetic way of remembering key words
  • Chunking & Mnemonics – the students created their own mnemonics to help remember ‘chunked’ information
  • Summarising – the students were given a text/source and were asked to draw out 5 key points.
  • Mind Maps – a visual thinking tool that helps structuring information
  • Command words – the students focused on 11 command words reflecting on the meaning of them and what the word required them to do
