Sixth Former Pursues His Medical Aspirations

Ex-Highcliffe student, Mathew Clark-Wheeler, embarked on a summer of medical experiences in pursuit of his aspiration to become a Doctor.

“I have wanted to study medicine since I was fourteen; I enjoyed all three sciences during my GCSEs and so I thought I’d make my life difficult by choosing all of them for A levels. I also took an EPQ focusing on prosthetics alongside my A levels and was lucky enough to receive A*AAA in my final examinations.
They were challenging subjects but with perseverance and fantastic support I managed to survive. During the summer after my first year of A levels, I shadowed a vascular surgeon at Bournemouth hospital where I spent time in theatre observing three different surgeries.
I also visited a local surgery and experienced what life as a general practitioner and a practice nurse was like - it was invaluable. Finally I visited the Biomedical Imaging Unit at Southampton University Hospital which the school helped me organise. In the unit I was fortunate to be using the electron microscopes and the very flashy confocal microscope which produces some amazing images in both 2D and 3D.

These were absolutely amazing experiences and reinforced my desire to study medicine. I am incredibly grateful for the school and will remember it fondly as I continue along my path to becoming a doctor.”
