Oxford University Trip for Year 11 Students

On the 8th of November, ten students from Highcliffe School travelled to Oxford University.

An account of the day, written by Mollie Baker

Once at Merton College, we went into a lecture theatre and heard introductory talks on the stereotypes about Oxford and common misconceptions. We then had the opportunity to listen to four different lectures from current Oxford postgraduates working towards their PhD’s in certain subjects: history, sleep psychology, archaeology and renewable energy. Once these lectures were complete and we had asked any questions, we then travelled to another college; Jesus College.

When we had arrived at Jesus College we did some research into courses on offer at Oxford and the best ways to apply including: the importance of A-Level choices, our results and super-curricular activities. Luckily we were also with some current Oxford undergraduates whilst doing this and were able to ask any questions about university life at Oxford and starting our A-Levels. After this we received a tour of Jesus College from the undergraduates which allowed us to appreciate the realities of Oxford from their perspective. We later returned to Merton College for a final speech to conclude the day before returning back to Highcliffe School.

This trip was an amazing opportunity which allowed us to see the benefits of going to university and the approach needed when applying for our A-Levels. It was great to hear the views of those currently studying at Oxford University.
