Brilliant Club

We are delighted that a cohort of our Year 7 students are working with the ‘Brilliant Club’ again this year.

The Brilliant Club is an award-winning charity that exists to widen access to highly selective universities for students from non- selective state schools.  The students will work with a PhD Tutor, who is an expert in their field, from a Russell Group University on a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) based project.

The programme, known as the Scholars Programme, will include a launch day at Southampton University followed by 4 tutorials, an assignment and a Graduation at another Russell Group University.  The Brilliant Club designs and delivers a structured, university-style learning experience that equips students with the knowledge, skills and ambition to help them secure a place at highly selective universities. Our students will study a rigorous academic subject and complete weekly homework assignments helping them to develop their higher order thinking skills. This is an academic challenge for them and all students will submit a final assignment of around 1500 words in length, which is pitched above the student’s current level and is marked in the style of university grading, receiving a 1st, 2:1. 2:2 or 3rd.

“Brilliant by name, brilliant by nature!  A group of Year 7s went on an adventure to Southampton University. We all got on the minibus and went to the Campus.  We met an actual archaeology undergraduate student who showed us around the facilities and who was our mentor for the day.  The tour of the site was really exciting as they have such amazing facilities including a cinema, theatre and fitness suite!! We had a tutorial with our PHD tutor.  We are going to be studying Ebola.  We learnt about the differences between bacteria and viruses.  After lunch we had a beginner's lecture on study skills. This was to enable us to find our best way of studying and learning and to prepare us for the HUGE essay we will have to write at the end of our project.  We were working with students from other schools who were from Years 7-9.  We are looking forward to our next assignment and tutorial.”
