Competitive Chess 2016

Highcliffe joins Mayor of Bournemouth Chess Competition

Highcliffe School has taken part in the Mayor of Bournemouth's junior competition for the first time this year and came close to making the final. In the last round we defeated Harewood College who have been winners of the competition for the past three years. There has been a surge of interest in chess particularly in year 7 and we have two girls playing for the first time. One of them, Annelie Davis, achieved 3.5 / 6 playing in the competition.

Tournament organiser, Eric Sachs, said:

“I am very pleased with the entry of Highcliffe School and that your efforts in chess are developing well. Your involvement added much interest and competition and I think you are not too far off reaching the final. Both Harewood and BGS are experienced but you took them both close.”

We would like to say a big Thank You to the Friends of Highcliffe School for investing in new chess boards, sets and clocks. The boards and sets are of international standard and the clocks will enable us to train students to play at a variety of different paces, helping us to encourage a range of thinking strategies. The new equipment also enables us to confidently host competitions with other schools and offer a full chess day during Activities Week.

Chess has real educational potential. It is perhaps the best board game ever invented, played by some 500 million players worldwide and one of the most powerful tools available to strengthen our minds.
