History students watch Hitler on Trial

Year 11 historians have recently had a fantastic opportunity to attend the highly acclaimed School History Scene’s Hitler on Trial at the Tivoli Theatre, Wimborne.

The half day presentation is designed to help students improve upon their examination performance in an imaginative and creative way. Our students were very fortunate to have their exam-busting workshop led by top historian and examiner Josh Brooman who went over actual GCSE candidate answers for their Germany in-depth study paper with them.

Here is what one student thought about their experience:

“When the examiner was going over students’ responses, I learnt two pieces of advice that were particularly relevant and useful. The first one was that you cannot automatically assume that a longer answer will receive more marks than a shorter one or that it will help you achieve a better grade. As the examiner revealed how one student in the end ran out of time by writing too much and did not finish their essay question at the end of their paper. The second piece of advice is how to spot and successfully answer iceberg questions.

I thought the play was well produced and was clever in the way that it put Hitler on Trial for ‘Crimes against Peace’. It meant that unlike the other charges that could have been presented, such as 'Crimes against Humanity', Hitler would not have obviously been found guilty. Furthermore, the witnesses used were well selected as they showed a wide range of people from different classes, professions and backgrounds, which were very relevant for the trial. In addition, the characters also gave a valid insight to different people's opinions in Germany at that period of time, on both politics and the First World War. Finally, it showed us why people would be willing to support Hitler and help him to come to power.

As the audience we had to engage well throughout the trial as we were the Jury and therefore needed to pay attention to the trial so that we could come to a fair judgement. There was an excellent ending that made most people jump as Hitler was murdered by an angry assailant.”
