Year 5 Christ-Maths Challenge Evening | Highcliffe School

Year 5 Christ-Maths Challenge Evening

Highcliffe recently invited able mathematicians in Year 5 from our feeder primary schools to attend a special Maths challenge evening at the school.

We were overwhelmed by the response with 52 pupils and their parents, grandparents and siblings attending.

Refreshments were served on arrival – that was after the pupils were encouraged to guess the number of Smarties in the jar. The guesses were put into a spread sheet on a laptop and the running mean average was constantly updated and displayed on a huge screen throughout the evening.

An introductory presentation was delivered by the Maths team which made everybody think and chuckle. A conundrum was set and correct answers were posted in the tombola during the evening. Pupils were then put into groups and spent around 10 minutes on each carousel activity. These ranged from Measuring Rudolph’s Medicine, Santa’s Delivery Station, Christmas Tree Origami and Matching the Magic Gifts, to name but a few.

Parents were encouraged to solve their own puzzles whilst their son or daughter worked on theirs at the various stations. It was lovely to see the determination on the faces and the competitive edge setting in. Pupils likewise were very well motivated to solve each task; the brain cells were definitely challenged.

At the end of the evening the winning answer was pulled from the tombola for a prize. As for the average mean guess for the sweets, this was converted into a graph showing how people had voted, this is based on the Mathematical experiment the wisdom of crowds. The winning guess was 605 when in fact the actual number was 611; very close indeed! There was a real buzz around the hall for the two hours. It was so rewarding to see the pupils’ faces light up when they knew they had solved the problem.

“Really appreciate the way Highcliffe are inspiring our daughter. You are her number one choice for secondary school.”

“A great evening to be able to see the interaction of children with teachers and the challenges they can have. Lovely to see the enthusiasm.”

“There were many challenging problems to solve and because I don’t solve similar problems regularly, it made me think.”

“Both Rebecca and I have enjoyed it. Rebecca said it was amazing”
