On Wednesday 9th December Miss Burgess and Mr Nicholls took 10 Year 9 students to Berthon, in Lymington, to gain an insight into the boat building industry. Students learned about the chemical properties of Epoxy and Polyester Resin as well as structural properties of Glass and Carbon Fibres.

Whilst at Berthon the students worked in pairs with apprentices to develop Polystyrene boat hulls which were to travel as far as possible in a water tank situated in the M.O.D section of the site.

Michael Devlin and George Hewitt designed a boat that travelled the furthest, beating Ballard students along the way.

It was a highly informative trip that illustrated the diverse range of skills used within the boat building industry. Students saw multi-million pound boats being built with the latest processes as well as a rig where apprentices are trained to develop traditional boat construction techniques.
The trip supplemented the GCSE curriculum by showing examples of why polymers and materials perform the way they do as well as demonstrating key design and problem solving skills.
