Year 12 Careers Day 2015

On Tuesday 7th July, 26 Year 12 students took part in the Employability, Empowerment & Enterprise Programme.

Discussing the links between education and learning, skills development, career progression and how much a student will earn once they go into the workplace remains a fundamental part of the Employability, Empowerment & Enterprise Programme. It highlights that generally, the more qualifications that are achieved, the higher earning potential there is and more career options will ultimately be made available.

The programme covered the following:

• What skills and attitudes employers are looking for;
• The importance of good employability skills and competencies such as team work; communication, decision making, resilience and enterprise capability;
• How education, learning and skills link to career choice and progression;
• How to evidence and demonstrate the skills employers are looking for;
• Identifying own strengths, weaknesses and personality traits, and how these could be applied in a particular career choice;
• Key financial capabilities and terminology, as well as the cost of living;
• Different career and progression routes to achieve their dream job;
• Possible careers and lifestyle expectations if they work hard towards their ambition;
• How to prepare for and behave in an interview;
• Take part in a mock interview with a recruiting manager from businesses locally.

Vicki Nickson, one of the students who took part in the programme, gave us this insight into the day:

“The programme was really helpful. We had about eight business people who came in as volunteers - all from different areas of work, including a man who worked in retail, a retired man who had been a fireman as well as many other careers in his working life, and a lady who ran courses for people who wanted to be self-employed. There was a wide range of people who were all very enthusiastic about coming in to see us. They were all friendly and helpful and seemed to enjoy the time they spent with us. We were taught about finance, the cost of living, debt, how to create a successful CV and tips on interview technique – what to do and what to avoid. All these things are important life skills that will really help us in the future. This day was definitely worthwhile and it was interesting to meet some successful business people and receive their advice, as under normal circumstances we would never have had this opportunity.”

With thanks to the funding contribution from Christchurch and East Dorset Council and Bournemouth University, Highcliffe School has been able to offer the Employability, Enterprise and Empowerment programme to Sixth Form students.
