Citizenship 'Letters of Responsibility' | Highcliffe School

Citizenship 'Letters of Responsibility'

Year 9 students are currently engaged in their Active Citizenship Rights and Responsibilities Unit.

They are addressing the theme "Our responsibilities as global citizens" and investigating the issue "Should the UK Government and its citizens do more to tackle climate change?"

Each class is split into groups of 3-5 students and all are working on individual campaigns. Some of the campaigns are aimed at encouraging younger students in school to take a more responsible attitude to not wasting electricity. For example; challenging them to unplug phone and laptop chargers and get parents to keep a log of this. Others are writing to Local Authorities and County Councils about cars share, provision of cycle lanes, waste management and other important issues. An example of this style of letter can be seen in 'Car Sharing Signs - Active Citizenship'.

Some have decided to tackle the amount of packaging businesses, especially supermarkets use. There have been many interesting ideas and all students are very much focussed on the Citizenship ethos of "Think Globally. Act locally".

All students have written to Mr Cameron and other party leaders asking them to outline their party’s position on climate change, the response is shown in the second item below.
