MFL speaking competition in Bath 2015

On 20th March Miss Weidemann and Mrs Walton took 5 students from years 7-12 to the South West MFL Speaking competition at the Royal High School in Bath.

This prestigious competition runs every year and provides an ideal opportunity for students to use their foreign languages out of the classroom by giving a 2-3 minute presentation to a panel of university lecturers and an audience of MFL teachers and other participating students. Each school can only submit two entries per Key Stage. Participating students are judged on presentation as well as language skills (spontaneity, fluency, accent, interest, range of language and originality) by a panel of judges. Although 3 topic areas are suggested for each Key Stage, students write their own presentations and can include creativity, imagination and an element of drama in their presentations. Teachers may correct the presentations linguistically and rehearse with the students.

This year the team consisted of Mia Allum (Year 7), James Moses (Year 9), Andrei Gheorghe
(Year 10), Kathryn Moses and Tessa Rizzoli (Year 12).

The Highcliffe participants delivered presentations of an extremely high standard and showed a great enthusiasm for languages throughout the day. They were a credit to the MFL department and the school!

At the end of the day the panel of judges decided to award the 1st prize in KS3 to James Moses for his extremely visual presentation on Dr Who in German. In KS5 the 1st prize went to Kathryn Moses for her thought provoking talk on the Eurovision song contest in Spanish. In addition Tessa Rizzoli was awarded a specially created runner-up prize for her very dramatic presentation on the topic of penfriends in German. Mia and Andrei both received certificates for their contributions. This was a wonderful achievement for the whole team! Well done and a big thank you for all your hard work and efforts!

All prize winners will now represent Highcliffe School at the national MFL speaking competition on 24th June in Bath. Good luck to all competitors!

Here are a few thoughts of one of our winners, Tessa Rizzoli. Perhaps a few more of you keen language learners will be inspired by her words to apply next year…

‘I loved being amongst people that share my same interest of foreign languages. I believe that if you don’t know a language of a certain country, you are missing something incredibly fascinating and you’ll never fully understand its culture. The atmosphere in Bath was rich in inspiration for the different topics that the students chose for their presentations. This was also a moment for me to reflect on the individuality of each language and consider again the beauty of all the languages of the world. All those sounds… and the nicest aspect is always realising that some words just don’t exist in another language and not all the expressions can be translated: that’s why we need languages. I also want to take this opportunity to thank all the members of staff for supporting these initiatives that make us students grow as individuals and members of society.’
