2015 Lecture Series

Once again, we have secured a diverse range of speakers for our Spring Lecture Series.


These events have always proved to be popular and informative. Please come along to Ballard School on any of the dates for a 7pm start. Details on each lecture in the series can be found below, the information booklet can also be downloaded from the bottom of this page. Tickets are not required and light refreshments will be served. Bring your family and friends along to be inspired.

 



Lecture One - Who would be in politics? By Cathy Mussert

Lecture Two - Within the law by Judge Sean Enright
Thursday 5 February 7.00pm


After many years practising at the Bar (1982 -2007), during which time he defended and prosecuted primarily cases that involved complex fraud, Mr Sean Enright was appointed to the Circuit bench in 2007. He is currently ‘sitting’ as a Circuit Judge at the Crown Court in Peterborough.
Judge Enright will be talking about how he entered the legal profession, his career so far, and his most interesting cases. He will also be answering questions about life both as a barrister in London Chambers, and also as a Circuit judge. Perhaps he will talk about his defence of Major Ingrams in the Who Wants to be a Millionaire case!

 


Lecture Three - Who would be in politics? By Cathy Mussert
Thursday 26 February 7.00pm


Cathy Mussert works for the Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, as Head of Strategic Communications at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. She graduated from the University of Liverpool. She will provide an insight into life at the heart of government and talk about why young people should get involved in politics. A keen sailor, Cathy is a crew member of a yacht competing in the Clipper Round the World Race 2015/16.

 


Lecture Four - Navigating the Stars by Phil Charles
Thursday 5 March 7.00pm


Phil Charles is Head of the School of Physics & Astronomy at Southampton University. Phil did an Astronomy BSc and PhD at University College London. From 1980 to 2000 he was in the Astrophysics Department at Oxford University. In 2000 he was appointed to the Chair of Astronomy at the University of Southampton, followed by a 7-year spell as Director of the South African Astronomical Observatory (in Cape Town) before returning to Southampton in 2011. He uses both space-based and ground-based telescopes, aiming to determine the fundamental properties of compact objects including black holes.

 


Lecture Five - Making Music by Christopher Gunning
Thursday 12 March 7.00pm


Christopher Gunning is a British composer of music for films, television and the concert hall. He has composed seven symphonies, numerous concertos and a large number of scores for films and television drama, including Agatha Christie’s Poirot, Porterhouse Blue and Middlemarch.
Christopher has won 4 BAFTA’s and 3 Ivor Novello awards and BASCA’s prestigious Gold Badge Award. In a career spanning some 40 years, he has worked in just about every musical area; he loves working with orchestras, both as composer and conductor, and is equally at home with computers.

 


Lecture Six - The write opportunities by John Waller & Simon Chadwick
Thursday 26 March 7.00pm


This lecture is a double header exploring two different writing professions.
Join local journalist John Waller from the Advertiser and Times for an insight into print and journalism. Discover about life at your local newspaper, how reporters find stories, how to break into journalism and the future for newsprint.
Followed by author Simon Chadwick who has written and illustrated a series of charming children’s books. Learn how to construct an engaging story, how certain words can bring a sentence to life, how illustrations speak a thousand words, and how to break into this competitive world.
