STEM vs STEAM | Highcliffe School

STEM vs STEAM

This year sees further increase in the provision the school is making for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering Art/Design and Maths) outside of timetabled classes.

A variety of activities are being run within the Maths curriculum area and further alliances are being strengthened between Science and Art, Design and Technology (ADT).
This year will see Science and ADT students converting a push along micro scooter to become electric by mounting and controlling a hand held electric drill to the chassis.  Once the transport functions it will be modified and developed to be more efficient, controllable and possibly look at energy recovery braking systems similar to those used in modern hybrid cars.  At this stage we also hope to look into green power initiatives to recharge the onboard battery.

We will also be delivering the Bronze and Silver CREST awards with key stage 3 students.  Year 7 will be inspired by the ‘Bloodhound’ project by working on Rocket powered cars.  The objective will be to see which design team can make their car go the furthest from a finite input of air.  Silver CREST students will be involved with a project that liaises with surveyors and engineers from outside of school. Students will have to prepare a professional presentation and deliver it to a group of representatives from industry.

The benefit gained from these experiences encourages students to apply knowledge from a variety of disciplines to solve genuine problems. Students who participate in these experiences should not only be able to recall core subject knowledge but should also be able to demonstrate thorough understanding through its practical application.
