Gifted and Talented Year 5 MFL & Catering Evening

Towards the end of the Summer Term twelve Year 5 pupils participated in a unique interactive evening combining French and catering.

The pupils from Hordle and Tiptoe primary schools came along with a parent armed with an apron ready for a French foodie challenge!

The pupils and parents assembled in one of the art rooms in the Da Vinci building at school where Mr Wayth (Senior Curriculum Leader, Modern Foreign Languages) delivered a session teaching the French vocabulary for ingredients required to make a crêpe.  The pupils then had to sort a recipe into the correct sequence, using their translation skills, under the guidance of Mr Maurice, our very own French chef! (and Curriculum Leader, French).  After this the pupils then had to design their own crêpe and think of an original name for it, whilst Mr Barnes (Curriculum Leader, German) kept us amused with his humour and banter.
Before the pupils were lead into the two kitchens, Mrs Leitch (Head of Catering) gave everyone a chef’s hat to decorate and wear.  The pupils really did look the part. Mrs Leitch then explained some of the health and safety aspects when working in a kitchen.  The pupils weighed their chosen ingredients and set to work cooking their creations.  We weren’t sure who was more competitive – the pupils or the Mums and Dads!
When cooking had finished one of their crêpes was selected for presentation and brought to the tasting table.

Judging was against five categories:
• Most creative crêpe
• Most attractive crêpe
• Best tasting crêpe
• Best French chef
• Tidiest chef

Judging was extremely difficult as the crêpes were of a very high standard.  Once judging had taken place and prizes awarded the families could then indulge and eat their crêpes. Understandably, this was not difficult!  The evening was most enjoyable. Interestingly, most pupils decided on a sweet crêpe option.  We had better buy more chocolate next time.

Here are some of the feedback comments from parents and pupils:
• Great fun! What a fab way to learn a foreign language!
