Johoku 2014 | Highcliffe School

Johoku 2014

At the end of the Spring Term, Highcliffe School welcomed a delegation of 12 students and 2 staff from Johoku High School, our partner school in Hiroshima, Japan. The Johoku boys were warmly hosted by 12 families for nearly two weeks.

As always, the boys participated in Highcliffe School life with gusto. They accompanied their English “buddies” to lessons and demonstrated origami to classes. A couple of students also took part in the “Open Mic” concerts and one student read to the class in an English lesson. (He did it very well by all accounts!) They also performed a dance and sang a song to a whole group of students one lunchtime in the gym.

The students also visited Ballard School and Tiptoe Primary where again they demonstrated origami and calligraphy. They also met the Mayor of Christchurch at the Civic Offices and one of them had a chance to put on his robes.

Their stay culminated in a Farewell Party at which Miss Potts and the group leader, Mr Branch, expressed their belief in the value of such exchange programmes. The Johoku boys performed a dance after which everyone tucked into scones and cake prepared by the combined efforts of the Highcliffe and Johoku students, supported by Miss Leitch and Mrs Rowe.

The impact of the exchange on Highcliffe School is huge owing to the way in which the Johoku boys get fully involved in so many aspects of school life. Furthermore, the buddies did a great job looking after the boys, making sure that they felt at home. Judging by the tears being shed on the day of departure, it was clear that the students had forged close relationships with each other. With the technology available now, I’m sure many of them will stay in touch. They have all made a friend for the future.
