Year 5 Humanities Gifted and Talented Evening | Highcliffe School

Year 5 Humanities Gifted and Talented Evening

On Wednesday 12th March the Humanities Faculty hosted a special evening for local Year 5 Gifted and Talented students.

The evening focused upon the current Syrian Refugee crisis and gave Year 5 students an insight into the sort of topics covered in Citizenship lessons at Highcliffe School.

The evening began with a warm welcome by Mrs Dedman explaining the comprehensive Gifted and Talented programme at Highcliffe. Students then had the chance to get to know one another through a serious of ice breakers introduced by Mrs Bewley and Miss Alston.

Some of the challenging activities included:
• Creating a human rights ‘fortune teller’.
• Participating in a walking debate about upholding and denying rights across the world.
• Learning about rights created by the United Nations specifically for children.
• Demonstrating the skill of empathy through a refugee suitcase activity.

The final activity was to participate in a nationwide OXFAM campaign called ‘Seen and Not Heard’. The students were asked to create a postcard which will be sent to our local MP concerning the Syrian Refugee crisis. The Year 5’s worked really hard throughout the session and developed some very eye-catching postcards with heartfelt messages for more action to be taken on this issue.

Well done to all those Year 5 students who attended the evening and got so involved in the activities set!
