The Debate is on!

Literacy – Year 11 Debate Club

Literacy is not just about getting spelling, punctuation and grammar right. It’s also about articulating your ideas orally in clear and thoughtful ways. The Year 11 Debate Club, held most Wednesdays in En1 and overseen by Mrs Dedman and Mr Bryden, provides an opportunity for our students to develop that aspect of literacy.

The Debate Club is run along the lines of a formal debate. A motion is presented to the house by the chair. One pair of students presents a short speech in support of the motion; another pair presents a short speech against it. After that, the chair – who is often a student - opens up the discussions to the floor for questions. The discussions are always well-informed, challenging and sometimes fierce!

Over the past term, what issues have been debated? It has been said that the range of topics has been huge. We’ve considered, amongst other things, the value of space exploration; changes to the driving age; as well as more obviously political issues such as whether particular countries should have nuclear programmes.

The Debate Club provides a forum in which issues that are of interest or of importance to young people can be debated in a more thorough and considered fashion.  Furthermore, it enables them to draw upon curriculum knowledge and their wider general knowledge in order to construct and challenge each other’s ideas. This is excellent training for the world of work and ensures that there are opportunities for students to develop all aspects of their literacy skills at Highcliffe.
