Year 8 Mosque Visit

On Monday 25th November 2013, 30 students in Year 8 went to visit The Medina mosque in Southampton.

The girls had to wear scarves as veils over their heads like Muslim women. On the journey people in other cars looked at us strangely because of this, as not many people are Muslims in Highcliffe. As we got nearer to Southampton more people are Muslim so wearing veils was not so different. When we saw the dome we knew we were almost there.

When we entered the Mosque, a young lady called Naheed greeted us and told us which cubby holes to put our shoes in. When we were shown through to the hall, we could smell the cleaning products that had been used; Mosques are kept very clean. The lady indicated where we should sit and explained to us about the 5 pillars of Islam, in ways that we could all understand. Then the Imam described in more detail what you do on the Hajj (what we are studying at the moment). The Hajj is a pillar of Islam and is the pilgrimage to Mecca, in Saudi Arabia, that a Muslim should make at least once in his/her lifetime. After this we were shown around all the main parts of the Mosque by the lady, my favourite part was the downstairs main hall because of the fascinating symbols (which were prayers) which adorned the front wall.

We all enjoyed our visit and were pleased we had had the opportunity to go there.
