Exhibitions, Architecture and Pierce Brosnan!

Every year, Art Design Technology takes a full coach with 6th Form students to London to be inspired by the architecture and exhibitions. This year was no exception other than a special added bonus.

We left school at 7am and made the obligatory stop at Fleet to re-fuel.  With minimal traffic delays we arrived in London around 10am where the Art, Graphics and Photography (A, G, P) students disembarked at Trafalgar Square whilst the Product Designers headed on to Somerset House.

From here the A, G, P students toured the Square, visited the National Gallery and walked along the Thames to Tate Britain.  The Product Designers walked to the Design Museum at Shad Thames to see exhibitions by Designers in residence and Paul Smith.

It is difficult to measure the impact of exposing the students to these high level responses by practising Artists and Designers but the students always return full of discussion and ideas about where the exposure might take them with their own ideas.

Both groups of students also got to walk a substantial distance to give them an experience of the diversity of Architecture and culture that is on offer in London.  Post-Modernism, Art Deco and Neo-Classical buildings were just a few of the examples that were discussed whilst strolling in the winter sun.

The icing on the cake for the trip was when the A, G, P students met Pierce Brosnan in Trafalgar Square.  Apparently he had heard we were coming and was very keen to meet us all.

I wonder who we will meet next year.
