Communication and Diversity

On Thursday the 26 of September Highcliffe School celebrated the International Day of Languages.

This day was the occasion for us to remind ourselves about the linguistic diversity of the world in which we live and the importance of being able to communicate in order to live in a peaceful world. Different subject areas across the school included an international touch to their lesson and were able to make this day special with students exposed to a range of ways in which the ability to communicate in different languages is vitally important.

These included such events as making ‘Stupendo Panna Cotta’ in Catering, taking part in cross curricular Mathematics and French lessons, working on the geography of European countries in their national language and exploring, in English lessons, the way in which English has borrowed words from so many other languages.

All our Year 8 students were able to experience learning a new language for the day thanks to our gifted team of Teaching Assistant, Mrs Walton / Mr Trach / Mrs Coomber, and Mr Bryden who respectively taught Flemish, Russian, Welsh and Japanese. In addition all the Year 7 students were given a mini European passport providing interesting facts on all the members of the European Union.

At tutor time all students called for the register using a word from a different language, took part in quizzes and were shown video clips. These warm up activities enabled the class to have a discussion on the importance of languages and on any linguistic experience students might have had abroad.
