TEAtime Lecture at Southampton University

The Sixth Form Team has developed over the years a strong set of activities to support Year 12 and Year 13 students through the university application process.

As part of this a group of thirteen Year 12 students attended the first of this year’s series of lectures at Southampton University on 24th October 2013. On arrival at the Highfield campus the students were given an introductory talk about the benefits of applying for Higher Education and especially as England ranks 2nd in the world when it comes to leading research institutions.

Students then enjoyed a buffet lunch and were joined by an undergraduate ambassador who answered all of their questions about university life. They then went to a lecture theatre to take part in a fascinating workshop in a about Biomedical Engineering. The theme was developed further in an inspiring main lecture on tissue engineering. It was delivered by David Gibbs, a Registrar in trauma and orthopedic surgery, but who spends most of his time now on his PhD, researching new technologies in stem cell engineering in order to make new bones! The future certainly looks promising with major developments in this field.

The afternoon was worthwhile and definitely gave the students things to think about with regards to where and how they want to pursue their studies and an insight into university life. We are very fortunate to have such a world renowned university on our doorstep. We look forward to attending more of these lectures in the near future.
