Year 8 IBM Visit

On the 6th of November 2013 the ICT and Computing Department took 25 year 8 girls to IBM in Hursley as part of their ‘Women In Technology’ programme.

As an ice breaker students completed a game ‘Technology Timeline’ which asked when some key inventions such as the Barcode and Radar were invented, with some interesting results regarding their perceptions and reality of time!
Students had the opportunity to play various different game consoles with a focus on key technology jobs such as a hardware engineer, software tester and software engineer.  It was interesting to be told to take apart electronic devices such as handheld console controllers to identify key parts inside.

They watched presentations by different software designers learning about how inventions and programming is developed, and finally students had a tour around the IBM labs showing how developments transpire into the real world.  Here they had a chance to walk through an example data centre, to experience the temperature changes and their unique cooling which saves and reuses energy.

Everyone had a fantastic day, and the girls were perfect ambassadors of Highcliffe School.  We look forward to taking our next trip there in the Spring.
