Hitting the Heights

As always it is great to be able to pass on news of the great achievements of our young people in their lives beyond the school gates.

Lily secures her place at Sandhurst!
Lily has just undergone, and been successful in, an intensive selection programme in order to secure her place at Sandhurst in 2022. This was a rigorous 3 day intensive selection process. Lily will receive a part scholarship for her studies in the Sixth Form and university where she will study Medicine. The scholarship has been offered through the Army Officer Selection Board. What an amazing achievement!

England footballer in our midst.
Megan Smith of Year 11 currently plays as a right-back in football for Hampshire Under 17s as well as for England Under 17s. She has already played against Wales (twice), France and Turkey. Megan trains twice a week for Hampshire and once a month over a weekend for England. Three times a year Megan undergoes a fitness test which determines her selection. With her determination I am sure we will see a lot more of this young lady.

Will is on the Pathway
Will van Wingerden started volleyball at an after school club in Year 7. His talent was quickly spotted and he trained with an older squad at Wessex Volleyball Club. In 2011 his squad managed to win the u15 National Cup making him a National Champion aged 13.

In 2012 his U16 squad became national semi- finalists. Will was then invited to national squad training for selection trials in Kettering (the home of Volleyball England) during the summer last year. This led to selection for the National U17 Volleyball squad which train once a month in Kettering. He has survived several cuts and remains the only player from a talented Wessex pool still in the National U17 team.

In addition to of this he played for Wessex Junior Men in the SW men's league, playing from Cardiff to Exeter to Plymouth and Bristol where his squad finished a very creditable 2nd out of 14.

January 2013 saw him invited to Loughborough University with the Youth Sports Trust annual National Talent Orientation Camp. This was a 4 day motivational camp with nationally selected youth from a wide variety of sports and many Olympians training them physically and mentally about the life of becoming an elite athlete.

April also saw the World Youth Games in London where Will got an England shirt for the first time. The squad came 2nd overall against mainly older teams. England preparation now heads towards NEVZA ( Northern European Volleyball Zone ) in October which will be his first international cap. Preparation will also include the UK school games. He is then set on a run of International tournaments as he develops through Cadets (U17) to England Juniors (U19).

Volleyball England are developing a talent pool aimed at achieving Olympic qualification for 2020 and 2024 which Will is working towards on the Talent Pathway.
