Physics and Music Evening | Highcliffe School

Physics and Music Evening

We were very pleased to invite pupils from Year 5 from our feeder schools, with their parents, to join in an interactive evening combining two different curriculum areas, namely Physics and Music.

Over 90 parents and pupils attended the workshop in the Sixth Form study room where everyone enjoyed some light refreshments on arrival. Mrs Dedman, Lead Teacher for Gifted & Talented at Highcliffe School gave a brief introduction, highlighting the provision for the students at Highcliffe with regards to the Gifted & Talented agenda. Miss Riley, one of the school’s music teachers, then gave an illuminating demonstration of how we use the Pentatonic Scale in our lives, often without realising it. It was then Miss Berkeley’s turn to teach us a little about sound waves. Miss Berkeley is Head of Physics and showed the audience some fascinating film clips of sound waves and the shapes they make.

After being taught the basics it was now the turn of the pupils and their parents to make their own music using the five notes in the Pentatonic Scale using a wooden board with pegs and elastic bands!

At the end of the evening the audience was brought back together where they played ‘Old Macdonald had a farm’ on their own improvised music boards. There was even a brave volunteer who demonstrated her own composition. It was a most enjoyable evening and the feedback was most encouraging. Below is a sample of some of the feedback comments;
Interesting way and enjoyable to show how important Music is to learning and connecting every subject.

‘Superb. Love to come again!’
‘It was a lot of fun and a brilliant idea to do evenings like this.’
‘Really enjoyable. Just the right mix of instruction and practical – and just the right level for Year 5. Thank you!’
