Best Season Ever

Following the success in the state school championships at Cokethorpe School, Highcliffe's U14s had gained their place in two major finals.

The first being the ESRFU State Schools Cup Final at University of Bristol v Beechen Cliff School, Bath, and the second being the Dorset & Wiltshire RFU County Plate Final v Gillingham at Canford School.

Unfortunately, in reaching the State School's Final we had picked up a couple of injuries in key positions. We knew that we would have to be at our very best to gain any sort of result, especially against a team that were schooled in the rugby heartlands of the West Country. The game was a real test of the team's character, especially as we were behind at half time. In the second half, the team fought valiantly and even though their efforts didn't change the result of the match, they certainly made it more respectable. In the Clubhouse, the Chairman of the English Schools RFU said during the presentations 'Highcliffe should be very proud of their performance, particularly in the second half'.

Just one week later, we travelled to Canford School to play in the County Plate Final wanting to build on that second half performance. When the whistle blew, Gillingham didn't know what had hit them as Highcliffe built a lead of 29-5 at half time. The second half continued with more scintillating rugby and to their credit Gillingham never stop fighting. Despite this the final result was 41-10, Highcliffe becoming county champions!

In the last 10 years, we have experienced a number of great achievements on the rugby field across many year groups. I certainly can't remember an end of season like it. It has to be said that this team's achievement in reaching the final of the RFU State Schools Cup has been the most outstanding since I have been at Highcliffe. To reach a final of such standing, to be representing all the state schools in the South East against the best in the South West was simply outstanding and the team deserve huge congratulations. To finish as Dorset & Wiltshire County Plate Champions perhaps the cherry on the top. But for me, what the team gained from their second half display in the game was my highlight. They proved in that half of rugby, they were really up for a stiff challenge.

Once again, I would like to pass on my thanks to all the parents of the team for their invaluable support, and our Headteacher who firmly and enthusiastically supports all school teams. I would also like to recognise our close link with New Milton RFC, who provide many extra opportunities and the club structure to develop the team.
