What a year for languages at Highcliffe School!

Highcliffe School is really fighting the trend nationally when it comes to modern foreign languages.

In 2012, only 41% of Year 11 students nationally took a modern foreign language, this a sad by-product of schools changing their curriculum in an effort to boost league table performance.

At Highcliffe we are continuing to offer four languages at GCSE as well as the very successful (GCSE equivalent) NVQ in French and Spanish. A quarter of our current GCSE students in Year 11 are really setting themselves apart by studying two languages. Some of our key results from last academic year: 71% of students achieved A*- C in their GCSE (higher than the national average). At A2 an impressive 75% of students achieved an A or B. with Murilo Fonseca-Silva gaining an outstanding A* in Italian. Our success continued in the vocational qualification, the NVQ, with 100% pass rate in French and Spanish. The Year 10 students have recently been presented with their FCSE certificates, which are the best results the school has had at this level: a 99% pass rate with 53% at distinction which compares to 43% nationally.

Languages beyond Highcliffe
Several students from last year’s Sixth Form have gone on to continue their language studies in higher education. Samuel Jackson is studying French with Economics at Nottingham University and Murilo Fonseca-Silva started his Italian and French language studies at the University of Warwick. Murilo is joined by Claudia Fairhurst who is studying Spanish and Italian at Warwick. Ollie Forrest is studying Italian and History at Cardiff University. Also at Cardiff is Becky Jackson who left Highcliffe School in 2010 and is currently enjoying her year studying in France as part of her French and Law degree.

Gifted and Talented work within MFL
The MFL trophy cabinet continues to bulge this year. Once again our Year 7 students have been busy learning and perfecting their pronunciation of the French, Spanish and German alphabets in preparation for Routes into Languages annual Spelling Bee Competition. With 30,000 contestants nationwide and over 2,000 in the South West Region, our students once again gave outstanding performances at the Regional Finals in Bath. Mark Lovett (Spanish) and Katherine Garner (German) both achieved 5th place and James Moses brought home the trophy gaining 1st place in German. James will head for the National Finals to be held in Cambridge on 5th July. In addition, 30 Year 7 students also recently took part in the national Lingutrivia French competition and prizes will be distributed to all of them soon. Well done!

Following on from the outstanding success of Kathryn Moses, Sam Jackson and Sam Nailor as overall winners in last year’s Pop Video Competition, we have a fresh set of linguist songwriters entering the Modern Foreign Languages Pop Video Competition. Good luck to them all

Foreign Language Leader Award
Congratulations to the thirteen Highcliffe Sixth Formers who have successfully completed the Foreign Language Leader Award. The students built up their knowledge of teaching and learning and successfully planned and delivered a Year 7 lesson in French, German, Italian or Spanish. The students also helped out with numerous languages events, such as the Primary Languages Festival.
Well done to: Phillip Haddow, Micol Donvito, Francesca Crisante, Emily Clifford, Phoebe Barnett, Curtis Badley, Camila Humphries, Tom Ibarguen-Burrows, James Bonney, Alice Kingham, Will Smith, Milly McCarthy and James Marsh.
