The impact of the iPad on our students

How do they have an effect on students’ progression and achievement?

The Teaching Assistant team has quickly found ways to use this technology to make a direct impact on the learning of students in the classroom. Just a couple of examples of this are outlined below:

During year 9 GCSE Music, PE and PWL lessons, students have been filmed during performances and practice sessions for their Mock Interviews. This practice enables students to critically analyse themselves immediately, improving their marks for their next assignment, along with developing their confidence and self-analysis skills.

Supporting students in Year 11 GCSE English, they have been able to use iBooks to annotate literature as class discussions have taken place. The annotations have been saved and discussed with students who can then develop their own notes. Using this technique has also proven beneficial for students who have English as an additional language, as translator applications can be used to demonstrate the differences between two words that sound the same but have very different meanings.

The school now has two class sets of iPads which are booked by teaching staff for use in a range of subject areas across the school. As a result online research can take place in the normal curriculum classrooms, with subject specific Apps used to enhance the lessons. Even in ICT lessons they have proven useful as part of the Mobile App Development unit, allowing students to see their app ‘live’ as they program in HTML5 on the workstations.
