Chess Club

Our Chess club is very popular.

We have new sets and boards which means that up to 20 games are being played each Thursday lunchtime in room EN1 (and a couple of sets are resident in the Sixth Form study room). Beginners are welcome and are immediately taught how to play. Students from years 7 to 13, are playing.

Highcliffe School has entered two competitions for the first time this year. We played Bishop Wordsworth's school in the ECF National Championship and we are in the opening round of the UK Schools Chess Challenge. Badges, mascots and various prizes are being awarded for each round of qualifying internal competitions.

Chess can fascinate and motivate people of all backgrounds and abilities. It not only encourages logical, focussed thought but also develops the resilience to stand by a decision once you have made it. Research studies have shown the positive impact chess has on students' academic performance, creativity and strategic thinking. Chess can also teach valuable life lessons such as sportsmanship - how to win graciously, learn from it and persevere.

Chess players will tell you it is the best board game ever invented, played by some 500 million players worldwide and one of the most powerful tools available to strengthen our minds.
