Art and Maths Gifted & Talented Evening

Painting by Numbers

On Tuesday 27th November 2013 we invited Year 5 pupils from our feeder schools, to participate in an evening of Art and Mathematics along with their parents. Pupils who had been identified as being ‘Gifted’ in Maths and/or ‘Talented’ in Art were invited to attend. The aim of the evening was to introduce the concept that our curriculum areas are interlinked, and to demonstrate how the subject areas are supportive of each other rather than disparate subjects. We wanted to give an opportunity for parents to work alongside their son/daughter and realise the constraints and demands that our students meet on a day to day basis.

The participants were welcomed into the Da Vinci building at 6pm where light refreshments were served. Mrs Dedman welcomed the audience and gave a brief introduction to the Gifted & Talented provision at Highcliffe School. Then Miss Aldis, from the Maths department, introduced the Fibonacci Sequence and how we are surrounded by this in our daily lives without knowing it. The Fibonacci Sequence and Golden Ratio is evident in nature and in many art forms. Then Mrs Saganic, from the Art department, introduced the work of Jasper Johns who has created so much work using the numbers from the Fibonacci Sequence. Mrs Saganic gave the audience some tips on how to work with oil pastels. Mrs Devlin, Mr Elliott and Mr Cowley were also on hand to support the workshops as well as some Year 10 students – Rosie, Charlotte, David, Alice and Luis. It was lovely to have our own students with us to assist the younger pupils.

Pupils and parents then went into 3 classrooms where they worked together to produce a piece of artwork of their own design using the Fibonacci Sequence, using oil pastels. The outcomes were excellent and everybody appeared to be having a good time. At the end of the evening everyone gathered in the Da Vinci atrium to share their work and evaluate their outcomes.
