Blindness Awareness Day

Shane was last seen in H2U before as a result of achieving the Gold Chief Scouts Award and since then he has gone from strength to strength in the scouting world.

Whilst he was unsuccessful in obtaining a place to attend the jamboree in Sweden last summer, he was offered a place on an International Event taking place in Denmark at the same time (and included a trip to the Sweden site meeting many international scouts). Prior to Denmark there were several training weekends mainly which revolved around learning pioneering skills (making tables and benches) as nothing is provided by the camp site except the grass !

Just over 50 Hampshire Scouts made their way to Denmark for the start of a 2 week learning experience including watercraft, making rafts, creating a ‘fire’ on the raft, cooking a meal on the fire and then sleeping out (whilst the raft is out in the middle of the lake )– woe betide anyone who rolled over in their sleep.

Shane has also been invited to join the Hampshire Youth Council who meet to discuss issues relevant to the various different ages within the scouting organization, and try to guide the adults towards their way of thinking, as the young people are the future of the organisation.

Since May 2011 Shane has also been taking a volunteering role learning to become a Young Leader of a local Scout troop which not only involves several weekends away on training activities but also a regular commitment to the troop to enable them to develop and enjoy scouting life. Shane benefits by learning the skills of leadership and it is envisaged that this training takes place over a period of approximately 2 years to enable a gradual transference from scout to young leader (under 18).

Shane recently took part in a ‘Vision Awareness’ Day which involved leading (and then being lead by) blindfolded people through a busy local high street to better understand the everyday issues vision impaired people have.

Shane has been involved in the Scouting Organization from the age of 7 and hopes that he can inspire other young people to become involved in a local troop which not only benefits each individual but also the community.
