Highcliffe Ecocouncil Springs into Action!

Representatives from all year groups have been invited to join the Highcliffe Ecocouncil and take part in a variety of projects and initiatives designed to make Highcliffe a greener place to be

The Ecocouncil has been meeting on a weekly basis and the group has been working hard on the first Highcliffe ‘Ecoaudit’ – talking to a variety of people in the school to highlight areas which we can focus on for environmental and ecological projects.  Mr Barnes has kindly supported the group for these sessions and with his expert guidance we are set to initiate a number of exciting projects this term.  If you have ideas or concerns about environmental issues in the school please let your year group representative know and they will bring this to the attention of the Ecocouncil.

Help the Hedgehog!
Unfortunately, the population of hedgehogs in the UK appears to be in decline.  It is not known how badly the population has been affected or what the primary reasons are for the dip in hedgehog numbers.  Highcliffe students can help solve this mystery by taking part in the national hedgehog survey:
http://www.hedgehogstreet.org/

The survey will run from February to October. By registering and logging sightings of hedgehogs throughout the year valuable information will be collected about the hedgehog population.  If you do decide to take part please let the Ecocouncil know of your involvement so we can make you a ‘Highcliffe Hedgehog Helper’!

Eco-Action Day
The Ecocouncil has been invited to take part in an Eco-Awareness day at Hordle School in March.  The Ecoteam are currently hard at work designing and constructing an ‘Ecometer’ that will highlight the importance of conserving energy and not wasting resources.  Mr Townshend and Mr Nicholls have provided their enthusiastic support and the finished product looks set to be very impressive!

Highcliffe Garden Action!
It is the time of year again when the school garden is being geared up for action.  We had enthusiastic help over the cold winter period to clear and tidy the area, often in fairly grim conditions!   The planting schedule has been determined for 2012 (with expert guidance from Mrs Collins) and we are set for a busy session of chitting, digging, sowing and weeding… followed  by a summer of cooking and eating!  If you are in year 7 or 8 and enjoy the idea of ‘growing your own’, you are more than welcome to join the Ecoclub on a Wednesday afternoon.  We meet in Sc12 immediately after school.
