Top Four Technician

Each year the Salters’ company seeks nominations for outstanding Science technicians. Awards are presented to the four best technicians at a ceremony held at Salters’ Hall in London.

This year Mrs L Collins, our fabulous Chemistry and Principle technician, won one of the four national awards.

We sent off her nomination, without her knowledge before the summer half term and were greeted on our return after the break by a very surprised Mrs Collins.
We nominated her because she is always excited by practical science and eager to try out new demonstrations and class practicals. She is an invaluable support to Science staff and gives us inspirational ideas.

She has been the central figure school Science Club for year 7-9 students for a number of years. She comes up with practical suggestions, which are always fun, engaging and well enjoyed by staff and students alike.

Mrs Collins makes an enormous contribution to help make Science such a positive experience for all the students who join us at Highcliffe. This was reflected in the strength of our students desire to support Mrs Collin’s nomination. Some of our sixth form students met the panel and were very eloquent in their support.

On Friday 18th November Mrs Collins went up to London with myself and Mr Booker (Curriculum Leader for Chemistry) and collected her award at the ceremony in Salter’s Hall. This was a prestigious event with many VIPs from the world of Science Education. We were welcomed by The Rt. Hon. Lord Butler of Brockwell, Master of the Salter’s company. The Rt. Hon. David Willetts MP and Minister of State for Universities and Science addressed the award winners and guests and then presented the awards. After the presentation and photographs we had a fabulous buffet luncheon and the opportunity to meet other award winners and VIPs.

We all had a fantastic day and it was great to be able to celebrate Mrs Collin’s achievement and the work that she does for all Science staff and students at Highcliffe School.
