Music Production Trip to Bournemouth University

Following on from the lecture on Music Production given by Dr Panos Amelidis from the Faculty of Creative Technology in January we took up the offer of a tour of the facilities at BU and the experience of a Music Production class.

Our year 11 musicians, having just completed their RSL grade exam in Music Production, impressed Dr Panos with their knowledge and skill in carrying out University-level tasks using sound design. We learned how sound design is used in all sectors of the entertainment industry in Film Soundtracks, TV & Media, Gaming, Web and App Design, Electronic Instrument Design, Virtual Instrument Technology and Sample Libraries, as well as being a crucial feature for all Music Production. Dr Panos explained how the Music Industry of the 21st century has grown alongside the development of new technology and new entertainment platforms. Graduates are now able to use the Degree in Music Production to gain employment with companies offering opportunities of a lifelong career within the creative industries.

For those wishing to pursue a career as a Music Producer Dr Panos emphasized the importance of sound design in creating a unique sonic identity in the face of a multiplicity of music competing for the consumer’s attention. Our students were inspired to move away from preset factory timbres and build their own soundscapes by learning how to process simple sounds, such as a door closing, or a camera click, into rich musical textures. This knowledge will help our students as they transition onto the Music Production pathway in the 6th Form where they are required, as part of the A level course, to demonstrate the creative use of technology when producing their own music.
