All of our students who applied were all successful in gaining places on the work placement programme at Bournemouth Hospital. Ria, Jack and Ryan attended the recent February event, while Tara attended the October course. Organised by Dorset Health Care Trust the programme is highly competitive and heavily oversubscribed. Whilst on placement the students gained outstanding first-hand experiences of life in the NHS at a busy hospital.
Day 1 was spent with GPs where there was chance to talk with a medical student from Southampton about how to get into medicine and his experiences, lifestyle etc. A GP was also quizzed about life in in the profession. Then there were angiograms to analyse, and medical instruments to identify. Next followed a practical activity on the Respiratory System to look at the pneumothorax condition (collapsed lung) and internal bleeding. The day then moved to Cardiology to spend time in theatre observing a stent implant as well as a procedure to regulate and normalize arrhythmia using cardiac ablation techniques. The students also practised blood sample taking and catheter insertion procedures. An amazing first day was had by all!
Day 2 was straight back into practical work with more time in Cardiology and then onto resuscitation and venepuncture, A+E and finally to take part in suturing techniques. Day 2 was a great day spent really on the front line of the NHS!
Day 3 was a super opportunity to be in the lecture theatre with talks on mental health and dementia, GUM as well as ‘how to apply through UCAS’ and the future planning of personal work shadowing after GCSEs. This final day brought all the aspects of the 3 days together and was another step towards becoming a medic of the future.
